Home Technology - Why It's Revolutionising The Way We Live

Wednesday 6th Nov 2019

In recent years, there has been a massive uptake in technology that has revolutionised the way we live and the way we manage our homes. Many of the innovations have been driven by the advent of the smart phone which made us think – just how much do we rely on our phones to control our homes and indeed, our lives?

We’ve made our own contribution to this with the launch of Surestop i-water control which can protect homes from water damage by simply swiping a switch on an app that is download to your phone. Things really can be that easy with the help of technology, and we take a look at some of the favourites to help us manage our homes.

Safe and sound

Smart technology has allowed for huge advancements in home security allowing you to keep any eye on your property even when you are not there.  Doorbells can be rung that alert your smartphone as to who is there so you can see who’s calling. And, if you want to take it one step further, cameras can live stream footage to your smartphone at all times of the day and night; particularly helpful if your property is left unattended for long periods of time.

Let there be light

Flicking a switch to turn the lights on and off is something that we take for granted but imagine if we told you this was all rather ‘old-hat’ now. The Philips Hue LED Lighting System means you can do away with traditional on/off switches and control your lighting from your smart phone whether you are sat on the sofa or miles away on holiday. Not only does it give you control over all the lighting in your home it can also help hugely with energy efficiency and for security purposes when you are away from the home, whether that is turning the lights on as night falls and you may still be at work, or managing the lighting when you are holidaying.

Window wise

This is one that really does have the ‘wow’ factor for us. The automated curtain and blind closing system and app. These work by installing motorised systems that are operated from your smartphone. Simply close your window dressings in any room at any time. Just as the lighting system, it can be used whilst you are at home or whilst you are away but gives the ultimate luxury in smartphone driven control of every element of our homes.

Managing energy

If you are really committed to decreasing your energy bills then a thermal leak detector is a fab little gadget that can check your home, or workplace, for thermals leaks. It has been found that up to 20% can be saved on heating and cooling bills so it’s a great investment.

And, if it is your own personal energy management that you are more concerned with check out sleep automation pads. These work by collecting all your sleep data so you can target how you can get better at it!

It’s fair to say that smart home technology is certainly having an impact on many aspects of our everyday lives helping us to manage our time more effectively and those essential day to day tasks.
